Couture creases

I couldn't help but smile at the wrinkles in this Versace couture dress which is coming up in the Passion or Fashion sale at Bonhams this month.

Even people selling the very best quality vintage clothes can still be caught out by creases. Just look at that skirt!

A Gianni Versace mauve and turquoise satin slip-dress, circa 1993, couture labelled and size 40, the bias cut gown caught in ruched gathers over one hip and adorned to the bodice with lime guipure, lime jewelled `V's to the straps, bust 86cm, 34in

It's always interesting to see auction images of vintage clothing - you get a much better sense of the real garment than you do in glossy publicity shots. If like me you are interested in fabrics and how clothes are made, it is an opportunity to get up close.

The catalogues are often not too expensive (occasionally free) and provide a wealth of detailed information for fashion students and the like. They are also just lovely to browse - and then to rush down to your friendly neighbourhood vintage boutique to get some of that good stuff for yourself (at a fraction of the price).
